Air compressors fall into two broad families: positive displacement machines that trap and squeeze air, and dynamic machines that accelerate air to build pressure. Each type suits different flows and pressures.
Positive Displacement Compressors
- Reciprocating (piston): high pressure, intermittent duty
- Rotary screw: continuous duty, industrial standard
- Rotary sliding vane: medium duty, quieter operation
- Scroll: oil-free, low noise, light duty
Dynamic Compressors
- Centrifugal: very high flow, oil-free process air
- Axial: extremely high flow, specialized use
Matching Type to Application
Choose screw or centrifugal for continuous plant air, piston for high-pressure or intermittent use, and scroll for clean, quiet light-duty needs.
Quick Reference
Flow, pressure, duty cycle and air purity are the four factors that determine the right type.
