How to Choose a Compressed Air Dryer for Your Plant

A compressor produces air, but the process usually needs dry air. Choosing the wrong dryer leaves water in the line, damages valves and tools, and creates quality failures that are blamed on the compressor instead of the air treatment.

This guide explains the two main dryer types, the key sizing factors, and how to choose based on dew point, airflow and installation conditions.

Start with the required pressure dew point

Pressure dew point is the temperature at which water vapor condenses at system pressure. A lower dew point means drier air. General factory air can often use a refrigerated dryer with a pressure dew point near 3°C. Processes that need very dry air use a desiccant dryer with a dew point of -40°C or lower.

Refrigerated vs desiccant dryers

  • Refrigerated dryer: Cools the air to condense and drain water. Lower initial cost, lower energy use, and suitable for general compressed air systems.
  • Desiccant dryer: Uses a desiccant material to adsorb moisture and reach a much lower dew point. Required for outdoor lines, food contact, pharmaceutical use, electronics and instrument air.

A refrigerated dryer is usually the right first choice for a standard plant air system. Move to desiccant only when the application needs a lower dew point or when piping runs through unheated or outdoor areas.

Size by airflow and pressure

The dryer flow rating must match the compressor output at the intended operating pressure. Check the rated CFM or m³/min at the same pressure and inlet temperature you will run in the plant. Undersizing a dryer creates wet air even when the compressor is correctly sized.

Check installation conditions

  • Inlet air temperature: High compressor discharge temperature increases dryer load.
  • Ambient temperature: Hot or humid rooms reduce dryer performance.
  • Drainage: Every dryer and filter needs a working condensate drain.
  • Maintenance access: Leave room to service the condenser, filter elements and drains.

Add filtration before and after the dryer

Dryers remove water, but they do not remove all oil or particles. Install a coalescing filter before the dryer to protect it from oil and water, and a particulate filter after the dryer to catch remaining particles. This order also extends dryer service life.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a refrigerated dryer for outdoor piping?

Usually not. If the pipe runs below the dryer dew point, condensation forms downstream. Use a desiccant dryer when the air temperature can drop below freezing or below the required dew point.

Is a larger dryer always safer?

No. A dryer should be matched to the actual flow and pressure. A heavily oversized dryer can cycle inefficiently and cost more to run without improving air quality.

Do I need a dryer if I have an oil-free compressor?

Oil-free does not mean water-free. You may still need a dryer because atmospheric air contains moisture regardless of the compressor type.
