Air Compressor Not Starting? 6 Causes and Fixes
When an air compressor will not start, the first step is not to press the reset button again. A no-start condition is usually a protection circuit doing its job, and repeated resets can turn a minor fault into motor or control damage.
This guide lists six common causes and the safe inspection order for a compressor that fails to start or stops immediately after starting.
1. Power supply or breaker problem
Check that the disconnect is on, the breaker is closed and incoming voltage matches the nameplate. A loose connection, blown fuse or missing phase can prevent the control circuit from energizing even when the main breaker looks normal.
2. Tripped overload relay
An overload trip often points to high current, low voltage, a blocked intake or a mechanical bind. Reset it only once after finding and correcting the cause. Do not repeatedly reset a thermal overload to force the machine to run.
3. Pressure switch or controller fault
If the controller does not send a start signal, the compressor stays silent even with good incoming power. Check the displayed pressure, control mode, emergency stop status and any active alarm before replacing parts.
4. Temperature sensor fault
A failed temperature sensor can report a high-temperature condition and prevent starting. Compare the displayed temperature with the actual machine temperature after a cool-down period.
5. Transformer or control circuit fault
The control transformer supplies the low-voltage circuit. If its secondary voltage is missing or unstable, the controller and relays cannot work. Only qualified personnel should measure the control circuit while following lockout procedures.
6. Motor or mechanical fault
A damaged motor, seized airend, blocked discharge or failed coupling can prevent rotation. If the compressor hums, trips instantly or rotates with unusual resistance, stop testing and inspect the mechanical drive train.
Safe startup check order
- Lock out power and verify the circuit is de-energized.
- Check breaker, fuses, incoming voltage and phase balance.
- Check the emergency stop and controller alarm state.
- Inspect the intake filter, oil level and motor cooling.
- Test the control transformer and sensor values only with the correct training.
- Correct one fault, then restart and observe the machine.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my compressor trip immediately after starting?
Look for overload, motor, control or mechanical faults. A machine that trips instantly should not be restarted until the cause is found.
Can I reset the overload relay and try again?
Reset once after correcting the fault. Repeated resets can damage the motor or control circuit and hide a real problem.
What should I check first when the compressor is silent?
Check incoming power, breaker status, emergency stop, controller display and active alarms before moving to motor or sensor testing.
Next step
Work through the power, control and mechanical checks in order. If the fault is electrical, stop at the point where the inspection requires qualified personnel and avoid opening energized panels.
