Air compressor noise is measured in dB(A) at a standard distance, usually one meter from the machine with panels closed. The test gives a comparable figure for buying decisions.
How the Measurement Works
A sound level meter at a fixed distance and height records the weighted level. Published values assume normal operating conditions with the enclosure closed.
Typical Levels
Modern enclosed screw compressors run roughly 65–75 dB(A). Open units and piston machines are louder.
Reducing Noise
- Choose an enclosed, low-noise design
- Add acoustic treatment to the plant room
- Use vibration isolators and flexible connections
