High Oil Content in Compressed Air: Causes and Fixes

Oil carryover into the air stream is a common screw compressor problem that contaminates tools and product. It usually traces back to the oil separator system or operating conditions.

1. Failing Oil Separator Element

A saturated or damaged separator element cannot coalesce oil. Replace it on schedule or when differential pressure rises.

2. Blocked Return Line

The scavenge line returns separated oil to the air end. A blocked line or failed check valve sends oil downstream instead.

3. Overfilled Oil

Too much oil overwhelms separation. Drain to the correct level while the machine is off.

4. Running Too Hot or Too Low Pressure

High discharge temperature and low system pressure both reduce separation efficiency. Correct the cooling and pressure settings.

Diagnostic Order

Check level first, then the return line, then the separator element and operating conditions.
