Sizing an Air Compressor for Sandblasting: CFM, PSI and Duty Cycle

Sandblasting is driven by the blast nozzle, not by compressor horsepower. The correct starting point is the nozzle air demand in CFM at the operating pressure.

Start with the Nozzle, Not the Tank

Each nozzle size has a CFM rating at a given pressure. A larger nozzle moves more abrasive but consumes far more air. Select the nozzle for the job, then size the compressor to it.

Pressure Drives Productivity

Most blasting runs at 90–125 psi. As pressure drops, stripping speed falls sharply. Keep the compressor and piping sized so the nozzle holds steady pressure under load.

Account for Duty Cycle

Continuous blasting demands a 100% duty cycle compressor. Intermittent touch-up work can use a smaller machine, but prolonged runs will overheat an undersized unit.

Add Margin

  • Add 15–20% airflow above nozzle demand
  • Account for hose length and fittings
  • Install an air cooler and moisture separator for dry abrasive

Quick Sizing Rule

Pick the nozzle, note its CFM at your target pressure, then choose a compressor that delivers that CFM plus margin at the same pressure.
